As part of our ongoing work with sturgeon restoration in the Genesee River and Lake Ontario, we are sometimes asked to examine deceased animals, like the three sturgeon in the photos to the right, from Onondaga Lake near Syracuse.

Dr. Jeff Wyatt, the Zoo’s Director of Animal Health and Conservation and head veterinarian, and Marc Chalupnicki, Biological Science Technician of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), are measuring the fish as part of this process. The largest sturgeon was measured at 6 feet 9 inches long and weighed approximately 100 lbs., still only about half grown!

Learning what we can from these opportunities will help us preserve this unusual fish for future generations.
